What is needed for Internet TV. We connect the TV receiver to the Internet. Wi-Fi TV connection

I was just thinking that I already wrote about connecting a TV to the World Wide Web. But I’ll now write about how to access the Internet from an LG TV that has the Smart TV function. Perhaps this article will seem too simple and unnecessary to some. But I am sure that many will find it useful.

Almost from all TVs that can connect to the Internet and have the Smart TV function, you can visit websites, log into social networks, read Twitter, etc. Yes, yes, even VKontakte can be accessed from the TV while lying on the couch. Here they are - technologies

I will write this article using the example of an LG TV (model LG 32LN575U, but that doesn't matter).

A few words about the browser

The browser built into LG TVs is quite decent. It can even play Flash. But he is there to play banners, nothing more. You can launch a video on some website, or a game on a social network. But, most likely, after a while an error will appear: , or something like that.

Navigation, functionality, and browser speed are, as I already wrote, at a decent level. Like for TV.

How to control Internet surfing from TV?

You can control it using the remote control that was included. But this is not very convenient. Then I remembered surfing the Internet from a regular mobile phone, which has buttons (oh, nostalgia). Controlling the TV browser from the remote control is pretty much the same.

It is best, of course, to connect a keyboard and mouse to the TV. Better yet, a wireless keyboard and mouse. Such control will be the most convenient. If you don’t have these devices, you can control the TV browser from your phone or tablet. Which works on Android, or iOS.

You can also buy a branded LG Magic Remote. From which it will be very convenient to control website viewing. At least it seems so to me. The last two methods are only suitable for LG TVs.

Connecting your TV to the Internet

It is clear that in order to view websites via Smart TV, the TV itself must be connected to the Internet. You can do it via cable, or you can do it via Wi-Fi, if possible. I wrote more about connection in separate articles:

If everything is fine with the connection, then you can proceed to launch the browser and visit sites.

We visit websites from an LG TV (Smart TV)

To get started, go to Smart TV (by pressing the special blue button on the remote control). Then, at the bottom, select and launch the browser” Internet“.

Please note that on the main page of Smart TV, the icon that displays the Internet connection status should be green. This means that the Internet is working and you can continue.

After launching the browser, you can immediately click on the address bar and use the keyboard to enter the address of the site you want to visit. Or, ask a search query. To confirm the transition to the address, click the button Go on the virtual keyboard, or using the cursor, select one of the options that pop up below.

A website or search results will open, which you can view, follow links, etc. Everything is like on a computer.

In the lower right corner, “ Mini TV“. You can browse websites and watch TV at the same time. If this window bothers you, you can close it. Hover your cursor over it and click on the cross that appears. To return “Mini TV”, click on the button in the form of a TV on the top control panel.

You can open many tabs at the same time. Just click on the green cross to open another tab. In this tab, by default, a panel opens that displays thumbnails of the pages of the most visited sites. A bit higher (below the address bar), the bookmarks panel is displayed.

When you have opened a site and want to add it to your bookmarks, just click on the corresponding button, which I showed in the screenshot below.

In order to open browser settings, history, bookmark manager and help, just click on the corresponding button and select the desired item. You can also enable full screen viewing, zoom in, and close the browser.

In the settings, you can select the start page, the default search engine, enable permanent display of the bookmarks bar, disable Flash, etc.

I just want to give you one piece of advice. I have already seen articles on the Internet several times that a vulnerability was discovered in Smart TV, albeit on Samsung TVs. The data that was entered on the TV could get to the attackers. I now have to enter passwords for different sites, and what’s even worse, payment information.

I hope this vulnerability has been fixed now. But, do not forget that Smart TV on any TV is a new and still somewhat crude technology. So, for now, it’s better not to pay for various services through the TV, and not to enter your payment information. For this, it is better to use a computer.

Only Smart TVs.

What connection methods are there?

  • Direct connection - the cable from the provider is immediately inserted into the TV. This method will not work if connecting to the Internet requires a login, password or server address.
  • Connection via a router (recommended) - the cable from the provider is inserted into the router, and then the TV is connected to the router. The method works with any type of Internet connection.

Below are instructions for the different episodes (click on the episode name to view), so find out your TV's episode before tuning.

  2. Pull the cable from the provider and the TV out of the router and insert it back. Try connecting again.
  3. If the Internet does not work, contact your Internet provider.

We know that a router is a device that provides Internet access to computers and mobile devices. It was like this for quite a long time, but now the scope of application of routers has expanded. For some time now, televisions have also been connected to them. For what? We will talk about this in this article.

What is Smart TV

Smart TV is smart television. Which is actually not television at all. This a set of additional features that expand the functions of your TV:

  • A complete replacement for terrestrial television. By connecting your TV to the Internet, you can watch movies and programs from any resource, of which there are many on the Internet, at any time.
  • You can watch videos from YouTube and social networks directly on it.
  • A wireless mouse, keyboard and webcam will turn it into an analogue of a PC.

Open Facebook and VKontakte directly from your TV! Chat via Skype on the big screen! All this is Smart TV.

Choosing a router

Most modern TVs are equipped with the Smart TV function. But to take advantage of its capabilities, you will need to connect your TV to the Internet. And for this you need a router. Some users think that Smart TV requires some kind of special router, with additional bells and whistles, without which smart TV will not work. This is wrong.

The TV connects to the network in the same way as any other device - via cable or Wi-Fi. And he doesn’t care how and through what devices he establishes a connection with the Internet. Therefore, if you already have a router at home and are thinking about buying a TV with the Smart TV function, you will not need any additional devices. Connect your TV to your device and enjoy.

If you don’t have a router, you can purchase any one.

One “but” - if you use several devices at home at the same time, for example, a laptop, smartphone and TV, do not buy budget models. A budget router may not be able to handle the load and online video will be slow.

Connection

By cable

You can connect the Internet to the TV directly via cable, but this will only work if your provider does not use a PPPoE or L2TP connection. We will not consider direct connection here, but will immediately move on to the issue of setting up Smart TV through a router. As an example, let's take connecting Samsung TVs with Smart TV to the Internet via a router via a LAN cable. For all models the procedure is almost identical. For other manufacturers, the Internet connection is configured in a similar way.

To connect to the router we need a cable. The patch cord that comes with the router is usually short and is only suitable if they are located next to each other. A cable of the required length can be purchased at any computer store.

Connection diagram

We plug one end of the cable into any free LAN port on the router, and connect the other end to the network connector on the TV. It's located on the back panel and looks exactly like the network card socket on a computer.

Settings

Now on TV open the menu and look for the “Network settings” item there(on most models the path looks like this: “Settings” - “Network” - “Open network settings”). If connected via cable, a message will appear indicating that the cable is connected. You just need to click on the “Start” submenu that opens. That's it, you can use Smart TV.

Your TV model may require you to first select a connection method. In this case – “Cable”. And click “Next”. If you are using a static IP address, you will need to enter it using the on-screen keyboard at this point. If your router distributes addresses automatically, the TV will immediately connect to the Internet.

Via Wi-Fi

Wireless connection has the main advantage - you don’t need to entangle your apartment with a web of wires to connect several devices. If you want to use this particular method, choose a TV equipped with a Wi-Fi module. If there is none, You can purchase an external USB adapter separately. Just check to see if it is compatible with your TV model.

We will assume that your router is configured, the Internet is working and there are no problems connecting client devices. On the TV we look for the same menu item “Network settings”, as described in connecting via cable. Since the cable is not connected, you will be prompted to configure the connection by clicking the "Next" button. Select the connection method “Wireless network” and wait until available wi-fi connections are found.

From this list, select yours and use the on-screen keyboard to enter the password. If you have, the TV will connect to the Internet. If you use static IP addresses, you will have to specify the address manually.

It is also possible on some devices.

Via set-top box

Why such difficulties? - you ask. After all, a set-top box is an extra device in the “TV - router - Internet” combination. Yes that's right. But only if your TV has a built-in Smart TV function. What if you have an old model, but want to try smart television? Or are you not satisfied with the functionality of yours? After all, as a rule, budget models have a minimal set of functions, and they do not always work well.

You can turn a regular TV into a smart one using a Smart Set-top Box. The main thing is that there is an opportunity to connect it. The set-top box connects to the TV via an HDMI port. On your TV you need to specify the HDMI port as the signal source. The TV set-top box itself is connected to the router via cable or via Wi-Fi.

Connection diagram

Below is a diagram in which the router is connected to the TV set-top box via an Ehternet cable. It is also possible to organize this connection via Wi-Fi.

After you have connected the set-top box to the TV, an image should appear on the screen. The consoles run the Android operating system with a special shell optimized for TVs.

Now you can use Smart TV even if your TV does not have this function.

Connecting a TV to a computer or phone via a router

TVs with Smart TV or DLNA support can play video files from your computer's hard drive. However, to do this, you need to connect the TV to the computer via a router via LAN cable or Wi-Fi and make some settings. We discussed connecting the TV to the network in the previous paragraphs. You probably won't have any problems connecting your PC. Now all that remains is to open access to the necessary folders on the computer. A list of media files will appear on the TV in the corresponding menu section.

With the DLNA function active, you can click on the file on your computer and select “Play on...” (your TV model will be indicated). The video file will start playing on the TV screen.

In the same way, you can connect an Android smartphone or tablet to your TV using a router. Both devices must be connected to the same network. You can play media files from your smartphone on your TV.

Conclusion

Finally, a small note. We looked at various ways to connect your TV to the Internet via a router. They all work, but not always equally well.

When watching movies in high quality over Wi-Fi, you may experience stuttering, image quality issues, and other difficulties.

In this case, it is better to use a cable connection - it will ensure stable data transfer.

A TV without Internet access today is perceived as something inferior and outdated, because the global network is a huge repository of multimedia content. However, TV is not a device that is usually replaced with a newer one every year. So what happens: will the owners of “anachronisms” released at a time when no one thought about the Internet on television remain deprived? Not at all. Almost any television receiver can be connected to the World Wide Web, with very few exceptions. And today we will talk about how to do this.

Smart TV is a TV combined with a computer, and the presence of a network adapter for such a device is a matter of course. Happy owners of smart boxes can even choose how to connect the TV to the Internet - via cable or Wi-Fi. Both are quite simple.

Connecting via cable is possible in two ways: directly and through a router. The first option is used if the TV is the only device in the house with a network adapter or a separate Internet channel is allocated for the TV. The provider cable is connected directly to the TV network adapter.

The second option, connecting via a router, is much more common. In this case, the TV becomes one of the members of the local network, where the router is the center and source of the Internet. The cable connects the TV network adapter and the LAN port of the router. No special settings are needed for this; the TV is connected to the router in the same way as a computer.

If Smart TV is equipped with a Wi-Fi adapter, it needs an access point or Wi-Fi router to connect to the global network.

Connecting and setting up the Internet on Smart TV Samsung

When connecting with cable type:

  • Let's connect the TV network adapter and the LAN port of the router using a patch cord (a piece of cable with connectors). The screenshot below shows the back of the TV where the network port is located.
  • Using the remote control, go to the Smart TV settings, from there to the “Network” and “Network Settings” menus.

  • In the “Network Type” section, select “Cable”.

  • Click the “Connect” button.

After a few seconds the connection will be established and activated. The TV will receive all network parameters automatically.

When connected wirelessly:

  • Let's go to the network settings through the main menu of Smart TV.

  • Select the connection type “Wireless”.

  • Let's select an access point running on your Wi-Fi router.

  • Enter the access point password and click “Finish”.

After a short time the connection will be established.

On different models of Samsung smart TVs, the appearance and location of menu elements differ, but the principle of connecting to the Internet is the same everywhere.

Connecting and setting up the Internet on LG Smart TV

By wire:

  • Establish a physical connection between the router and TV. The socket for the network cable on LG TVs, like Samsung, is located on the rear panel.
  • Use your remote control to enter the TV settings menu and go to the “Network” section.

  • Select "Wired Connection (Ethernet)".

  • Once the connection is established, click “Done” and exit the menu. The Internet is configured.

Wirelessly:

  • Go through the main menu to network settings.
  • Select the connection type "Wireless".

  • In the list of options for connecting to a wireless network, click the “Settings from the list of access points” button.

  • Enter the password to connect to your access point. Confirm your entry and wait a few seconds until the connection is established.

If your Smart TV model and router support a connection using WPS technology, you can click the second button in this menu - “Easy installation (WPS mode)”, and then press the same button on the router.

Different LG Smart TVs have slightly different menu interfaces. But the difference between them is not so significant that you can get confused. If you figure out how to connect one model of TV to the Internet, you can easily do it on another.

Other brands of “smart” TVs - Sony, Toshiba, Philips, etc., establish connections with the global network using exactly the same scheme.

How to connect a Smart TV to the Internet without a built-in network adapter

There are situations when installing a wired TV connection to the Internet is impossible, for example, if there are no free ports on the router or the cable does not fit into the interior design. The device is not equipped with a wireless network card. A removable Wi-Fi adapter that is inserted into a USB port will help correct the situation.

Unfortunately, these removable adapters are not universal. They are produced by TV manufacturers themselves and only for devices of their own brand, and each device supports a strictly limited range of TV models. Which devices a particular adapter is compatible with should be indicated in the technical specifications of the latter.

Externally, a removable Wi-Fi adapter resembles a large flash drive or USB modem, but there are models of another type - in the form of a small box with a cable and an antenna (or without it). The former look more aesthetically pleasing, but the latter pick up the wireless signal better, since thanks to the cable they can be moved from place to place and thereby find the best reception area.

Like other Wi-Fi devices, removable adapters for TV belong to different generations of the IEEE 802.11 standard and operate in different frequency ranges.

Modern standards include IEEE 802.11n and IEEE 802.11ac. Only they support a data transfer rate sufficient for viewing high-definition video content, and operate in two frequency ranges at once - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. This means that they are compatible with any Wi-Fi routers, since the bulk of the latter broadcast in either one band or the other (less often in both). And for devices to work together, they need to be tuned to one common frequency.

In addition, removable Wi-Fi adapters for TV differ in the following parameters:

  • Signal reception radius. It is important that this value is not less than the distance to the access point.
  • Transmitter power. Amounts to 30-50-70-100 mW. The lower the power of the device, the higher it should be at the access point, especially if the latter is located at a considerable distance from the TV.
  • Support for encryption technologies in Wi-Fi networks. To be compatible with modern devices, the adapter must support WPA and WPA 2 standards, and with older devices (generations of the 90s and early 2000s) - WEP.

Connecting a regular TV to the World Wide Web

Regular TVs (not Smart TVs) do not have network adapters, so you won’t be able to simply connect such a device to the Internet. But it is very easy to get around this limitation. It is enough to connect a special set-top box to the TV - Android TV Box, Apple TV or their equivalent. To the delight of owners of old TVs, such set-top boxes are now sold at affordable prices and their choice is very large.

A set-top box (media player) is a compact device that looks like a large flash drive or plastic box that will not only equip your TV with network interfaces, but also give it other “smart” functions. This is, in fact, a miniature computer with its own processor, memory, operating system and other attributes, the monitor of which is a TV, and the input device is a remote control. By the way, special keyboards and similar mice are produced for television set-top boxes, and many of them are compatible with regular ones.

TV set-top boxes are distinguished by technical parameters. They, like computers and smartphones, can be more or less productive. They have different processors, different amounts of RAM and permanent memory, and different interfaces. Such devices can connect to the Internet either by wire or over the air.

Set-top boxes, unlike removable Wi-Fi receivers, are universal, that is, compatible with various brands and models of TV. The only important thing is that both devices have the same connection interface. Usually this is HDMI, less often USB, and even less often other types.

Setting up the Internet on a TV with a media player is unlikely to cause difficulties for those who have at least once connected a smartphone or computer to the network. After all, they run on the same operating systems as mobile gadgets on a PC: Andriod, iOS, Windows.

How to properly connect the set-top box to the TV

  • Turn off the power to both devices (if the set-top box does not have its own power adapter, then only the TV). To be safe, it is better to unplug the plugs from the sockets. Although the HDMI interface supports hot plugging, in fact it often burns out, especially if you connect devices, each of which has its own power source.
  • Insert the media player or its cable into the HDMI or USB socket of the TV.
  • Turn on your devices.
  • Using the remote control supplied with the set-top box, go to the menu, and from there to the network settings.

Connecting TV to the Internet via an electrical outlet

The technology for transmitting data over electrical wires - PLC (PowerLine Communication) has existed for a long time, but is not yet very popular. However, soon, we must expect, its finest hour will come, because with the introduction of the Internet of Things and smart home systems into life, traditional wired communication will be difficult, and the radio airwaves will be oversaturated with information flows. Then the electrical network as a transmission medium will come in handy.

PLC is not an independent technology for connecting to the Internet; it transmits data according to the principle of Ethernet cable communication (if you do not take into account the peculiarities of transmission over power lines), but is devoid of its main drawback - the need to lay and mask wires. The places where devices are connected to the network are ordinary electrical sockets, or rather, special adapters installed in them.

PLC adapters, such as those in the picture, are supplied to the Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian markets by TP-Link, ZyXEL, D-Link and some others. They cost around 1000-5000 rubles (the price depends on the transmission speed of Ethernet and PowerLine channels, the number of devices included, LAN ports and other options).

For comfortable viewing of high-definition video, it is optimal to buy a PLC with a transfer speed of 100 Mbit/s.

Connecting such devices is not difficult: the LAN ports of one PLC adapter module and the TV are connected with a patch cord, then the adapter is plugged into a power outlet. The second module is connected to the LAN connector of the router and an outlet near it. After this, set up wired Internet on TV in the usual way.

You can connect your TV to the Internet via cable, wireless Wi-Fi network or SMART set-top box.

Connecting the TV to the computer via HDMI cable

The Internet will not appear on the TV if you simply connect the HDMI cable from the computer. Thus, you can only use the TV as a monitor. For example, when you want to watch a movie on the big screen, you turn on the movie on your computer and watch it on TV.

To connect, you need an HDMI cable that connects to the computer’s video card and TV; no additional settings are needed.
In addition to HDMI, there are connections such as DVI, VGA or S-Video. But there is also a drawback to this connection - you will not be able to connect a Samsung TV to the SMART TV service.

Internet connection on TV via cable

Most modern TVs have SMART TV, which means that they can access the Internet; you just need to connect a cable or wireless network. To connect the TV to the Internet, insert the cable into the LAN input. For many models, the connection is established automatically; on Samsung TVs you need to go to the settings and select “Wired” in the “Network” section.

Check with your Internet provider about the type of connection; if it is dynamic (DHCP), then no additional settings are needed. If the connection type is static, then you need to specify the IP address in the settings.

1. Enter the main menu of the TV and find the “Network” tab.
2. Select “Network Settings”, connection type “Cable”.
3. Find the IP Address Settings tab.
4. Select manual network setup.
5. Enter the basic parameters.
6. Wait for the automatic connection check.

If you need to enter a login and password to connect to the Internet (PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP), then you won’t be able to connect directly to the TV; you need to use a Wi-Fi router.

Connecting a TV via a Wi-Fi router

This connection method is the most common, there are two options:

  • . connect the Internet via a cable from the router;
  • . connect via wireless network.

A wired connection is preferable, i.e. An internet cable comes into the apartment and connects to the Wi-Fi router, and from the router there is a cable to the TV. In this case, there will be less speed loss.

Connecting via a wireless network is more convenient because there are no extra cables, but the Internet speed will drop, especially if the router is in one room and the TV is in another. If the router is far from the TV, it is better to connect via cable.

To set up a Wi-Fi connection on your TV:

1. Go to the TV settings in the "Network" or "Network connections" section
2. Select the type "Wireless" or "Wi-Fi"
3. After scanning, available networks will be found, select yours
4. Enter the password to access your Wi-Fi network.

Some TVs do not have a built-in Wi-Fi receiver, but if there is a USB input, then you can buy a Wi-Fi adapter. Before purchasing, it is better to consult which adapter is suitable for your TV model.

Internet connection via Android TV BOX

Just because the TV has a connector for an Internet cable, this does not mean that you can connect to the Internet. In older models, it is needed to update the firmware, view photos, videos from the computer. In this case, you can connect to the Internet via Android TV BOX. This is a special set-top box that turns a regular TV into a Smart TV, i.e. You will be able to watch IPTV, videos from Youtube, and use the Internet just like on a computer.

The tuner is connected to the TV via HDMI or 3RCA (tulip) cables; accordingly, the TV must have one of these inputs.

Choose a set-top box that has the ability to connect to the Internet, i.e. must have an Ethernet input or built-in Wi-Fi receiver. The price for such Android TV BOX ranges from 1500 to 3000 UAH. You can also buy a tuner without Wi-Fi for 500-800 UAH, but to connect it to the Internet you need to additionally buy a USB Wi-Fi adapter, its cost is about 200 UAH.

Connection diagram for the console: Wi-Fi router - Android TV BOX - TV.

If it is not possible to connect to cable Internet, you can connect a USB 4G modem and mobile Internet to the set-top box. You can use your smartphone instead of a modem.

T2 tuner with Wi-Fi support

T2 tuners with Wi-Fi support are sold on the Internet. Most often, it does not have a built-in Wi-Fi module, but you can connect a Wi-Fi adapter via the USB input. Such tuners allow you to watch Youtube, IPTV on your TV, and use the Megogo service. Cost from 400 to 800 UAH. Please note that this is not an Android SMART TV set-top box, but a T2 receiver with Wi-Fi support.
