Recently I needed a very small flashlight. This flashlight was needed to check the chicken coop in the evening in the dark.

The fact is that chickens, sitting on roosts, often fight for the best places or the opportunity to take a place closer to the rooster. In this case, it happens that one or more chickens fall to the floor. In the winter, when we turned on the lights in the chicken coop in the evenings, it was not a big deal, since the chickens would immediately jump back onto their roosts.

However, now, the amount of daylight has increased, and we no longer turn on the lights in the chicken coop in the evenings. Therefore, chickens climb onto roosts at dusk. And since they see very poorly at dusk, if they fall to the floor, they can no longer climb onto their perches on their own and often remain sitting on the floor all night.

Therefore, in the evenings, when it is already dark, I have to go to the chicken coop and check that all the chickens are sitting on the roost, and also put in those that have fallen on the floor. Naturally, this needs to be done in the light, so at first I turned on a big light. However, this turned out to be very inconvenient, because in the light, the rest of the chickens, who had already fallen asleep while sitting on their roosts, began to wake up and walk around.

That's why I needed a small flashlight. Moreover, such a flashlight had to satisfy two requirements:

Firstly, to be very small and light so that it can be constantly carried in a jacket pocket. And secondly, it should not be very bright (and even dim enough) so that its light does not wake up sleeping chickens, but at the same time it does not illuminate the entire chicken coop very much.

Since none of the available commercial flashlights met the above requirements, I decided to make a homemade small flashlight. To do this, I rummaged through my supplies and found this LED with a small battery compartment, left over from an old lighter.

I put batteries in it.

And it turned out that everything was working fine and the LED was on.

It turned out that this is actually what I need. Almost finished mini-flashlight. However, it was necessary to make some kind of housing for it.

And I decided to make such a body from a disposable medical syringe with a capacity of 5 ml. In addition, I needed a 3 ml syringe to make a flashlight button out of it.

Materials and tools for making a flashlight

In general, to make a flashlight, I needed the following supplies:

• The basis of the flashlight is an LED with a battery compartment and a tin plate for turning on (from an old lighter);
• Two plastic disposable syringes with a capacity of 3 ml and 5 ml.

Tools

• Awl;
• Electric drill;
• Metal drill with a diameter of 5 mm;
• Construction knife;
• Powerful scissors.

First, I cut off the spout and also the back of the 5 ml syringe.

Then I drilled a hole with a 5 mm diameter drill in the front of the syringe where the spout was, for the LED.

After that, I inserted the battery compartment with the LED into the section of the syringe. As you can see, the LED fits normally into the hole.

Then I finally cut and trimmed the back of the syringe section.

At the same time, I left some allowance so that a plug could be inserted into it, for which I used a rubber syringe plunger.

This plug is inserted from the back and securely fixes the battery compartment with the LED inside the syringe section.

By the way, if necessary, the battery compartment with the LED can be easily pulled out if you press on the LED from the front.

Making a power button

Now you need to make a button to turn on the flashlight.

For this, I decided to use a 3 ml syringe.

The spout of this syringe with part of the base cut off from the front of the syringe will serve as the button itself.

For this button, I drilled another hole in the front of the syringe section that serves as the body of the flashlight.

And I shortened the button itself somewhat and cut off the excess parts of the base.

Then I tried to insert this button into the hole in the case. I must say that it is inserted quite easily.

Well, then I inserted the battery compartment with the LED into the case, holding the button with my fingers so that the tin plate that completes the electrical circuit was directly under the button.

And then I secured everything by inserting a rubber plug at the back.

So my flashlight is ready!

I must say that the power button works very well, because when pressed very lightly, it does not work, but if you press it a little harder, the flashlight turns on. This is exactly what you need!

In my opinion, this flashlight turned out to be very successful and convenient, since it satisfies all the initial requirements.

On the one hand, it turned out to be very small and does not take up any space in your pocket.

On the other hand, it does not shine brightly, but at the same time it illuminates a small room so that everything is more or less visible.

And finally, another advantage is that, if necessary, the entire flashlight can be quickly disassembled, for example, to replace batteries.

At the same time, when assembled, all its elements are held quite securely.

Naturally, such a flashlight can be very useful in many other cases. For example, it can be used as a lock or keyhole illuminator if you have to open a house or garage door in the dark, when looking for things in a dark corner of a closet, and in many other similar cases.
