A real problem for many users is the need to correct audio and video files at home. After all, in order to get a high-quality result, it is not enough just to record a video. It is impossible to do without editing the final version. In addition, you will have to apply filters, effects, add comments, sound, remove unnecessary things, and then glue the individual fragments into a single plot.

The requirements are also clear about what the program for audio processing should be. But finding a good solution among the huge number of offers on the market is not always easy. After all, it’s so easy to get lost among the abundance of offers. Find out more about how to avoid this and make the right decision in our article.

Editing programs: main requirements

The huge selection among modern sound editors makes the average person feel confused: which option will be the best? How not to waste time using a not very high-quality utility due to ignorance of the existence of a more functional option? At first glance, it is difficult to make a decision. However, there are several points that must be taken into account. When deciding on a particular solution, check:

  • How good are the options of the utility you have chosen? Is it possible to edit video, capture screens, insert a template into a clip, or include subtitles in a project?
  • Is the program design user-friendly? Is it possible to customize it for yourself?
  • Can the final document be saved in any of the most common formats?
  • Are there any good free programs or is it better to immediately opt for a paid solution?

Among the many programs that meet these requirements, we have selected several of the best options.

AudioMASTER

The program is comfortable to use and not at all complicated. Its purpose is concentrated in editing audio in video. The functionality allows you to trim the sound, cut out a separate fragment, add special effects and background sound (atmospheres) to it. The program is Russified. The functionality allows you to make your own recording from a microphone. The utility helps you extract an audio track from a video. The editor works with most known formats.

Wave Editor

This is a fairly popular editor for audio processing. The interface here is Russified. The utility supports almost all popular audio formats, except OGG and Lossless audio. Among the available functionality: the ability to cut out a fragment of a composition, remove unnecessary things, possible effects of normalization, adding or removing silence, inverting, reverse, increasing and decreasing volume. The interface is quite convenient and comfortable to use.

Wavepad Sound Editor

A very high-quality utility, significantly superior to all the options listed above. In addition to the option to trim songs, there is a special tool for creating ringtones. In addition, the format and quality are available for selection, taking into account the device on which such a program will be installed in the future. Among the advantages of this program is a whole set of effects for improving the quality and processing of sound, there are tools for copying CDs and recording, and working with voice. The utility supports VST. With the help of this technology, a significant expansion of functionality is available. There is the possibility of batch processing of audio, which is very convenient if you need to edit and convert several tracks at once.

GoldWave

In its functionality, although visually different, this program is reminiscent of Wavepad Sound Editor. This is a feature-rich and powerful utility with the only drawback - the lack of VST support. Users of the program can record and import Audio CDs, correct, process and modify audio files. In addition, there is a built-in converter and a batch file processing option. An important advantage of the editor is its user-friendly interface.

OcenAudio

OcenAudio is a free program with a Russified editor. The utility is equipped with the functionality necessary for correct work with audio files. In addition, additional options are available for editing files, changing audio quality and track information. There is support for VST, which significantly expands the functionality of the editor.

Audacity

Audacity is a modern audio editor with good functionality and a Russian-language interface. The utility supports most formats, allows you to trim tracks, record audio, and add special effects. The only drawback of the application is that it is quite difficult to use, especially for those who do not have experience with such programs. The functionality of this utility is amazing: multi-track editing is available, cleaning audio recordings from artifacts and noise, there are tools that change the tempo and key of the music, and its sound.

Sound Forge Pro

Sound Forge Pro is a high-quality program for professional audio processing, editing and recording. The powerful functionality of the utility allows it to be fully used in sound recording studios for editing (mixing) compositions. The publisher of the program is Sony. It is possible to support all popular audio formats, it is possible to burn and import CDs, batch file processing, and professional audio recording. The program is equipped with a whole arsenal of built-in effects, VST and other tools for analyzing audio files are available. The only drawback is that the program is paid.

Ashampoo Music Studio

A unique program from a well-known developer, equipped with all the necessary functions for audio correction, Audio CD import, and basic recording tools. The utility has an intuitive interface and is Russified. Among the advantages is that it has good capabilities for working with a user’s music library. Allows you to create playlists, mix audio, create covers for CDs, and organize your media library. Unfortunately, this program is paid.

Modern sound editing programs are represented by a whole range on the market. Each of them has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are free and paid versions. Utilities with typical tasks and programs with a whole range of additional functions. Which one will be the most optimal in each specific case is up to you to decide.

Any sound engineer/beatmaker has to process digital audio, just like a photographer has to edit images. The sound engineer simply needs to mask unsuccessful or damaged fragments, remove noise, and use filters. In general, audio processing is not an easy task, and today I have compiled a list of the most convenient and popular audio editors to help you.

Sony Sound Forge Pro 11.0 build 234

He has been considered the best professional editor for many years. Many masters use it to make the sound better. SONY Sound Forge Pro is the number one choice for a generation of artists, producers and editors. Its popularity and high-quality processing make it one of the most advanced audio editors.

Adobe Audition CC

This program offers fairly intuitive tools for audio editing, mixing, restoration and effects creation. There is a Sound Remover that allows you to remove sounds from an entire file by analyzing a small selected area. It is possible to create gorgeous soundscapes with sound design tools. Worth a try.

Adobe Audition CS6

And this audio editor is highly productive. There are powerful features like real-time clip stretching and automatic speech alignment. Helps you save a lot of time.

GoldWave v5.67

This professional sound editor is capable of processing complex sounds, restoring, enhancing and converting.

A small, free MP3 file editor for direct editing (no decoding), eliminating quality loss and saving time. The program allows you to trim silence, normalize and smoothly reduce sound, combine files, edit ID3 tags and burn MP3 to a disc without decompression in PCM format (ACM and LAME codecs are supported). Supports large files.

Remember the times when we rejoiced at the advent of polyphony in mobile phones? What opportunities opened up: you could put your favorite melody on the call (which, however, could only be ordered at that time on paid services).

And even though it was not a full-fledged composition, but only a polyphonic one, this fashion (putting a melody on a bell) spread everywhere. And even then there were rumors, or perhaps wild dreams, that very soon mobile phones would begin to play full-fledged melodies in mp3 format.

Soon this is exactly what happened. But since those mobile phones had very little memory (only a few megabytes), spending it entirely on just one song, even a favorite one, was completely reckless (after all, you could save a few more photos with a 0.3 megapixel camera!).

It was then that it became fashionable to cut tracks, say, to the chorus or favorite moment in the song. And, oddly enough, now mp3 melodies are cut off no less often than before: new favorite compositions appear, old ones become boring, and we still get to the phone just as quickly, so we have absolutely no need for a long melody.

Why did I remember all this? Yes, because there are a great many programs for editing (including trimming) audio files, and in order to trim a melody several times a year, it is not at all necessary to learn to use professional software, which you most likely do not want to understand. And here is a free, convenient and extremely simple program for any user - mp3DirectCut.

However, trimming melodies is not the only function of the program, but, as it seems to me, it is one of the most popular “light” audio editors in this class.

Main features of the mp3DirectCut program:

  • Trimming, splicing and extracting audio, some editing capabilities;
  • Record and encode to mp3 with audio input device;
  • Editing metadata of audio files.

Program installation

Installation takes place in literally two clicks: just unpack the archive and run!

Interface

When you first launch the program, you will be greeted and asked to select an interface language, fortunately, Russian is present.

The main window of the program: the central part is given to the graph - a standard situation for such programs. However, this graph is not the actual waveform of the "audio object"; it is intended to be used for navigation rather than to obtain frequency information from visual perception.

As you can see, almost all the buttons are inactive until the audio file to be edited is opened.

Now let’s add a full-fledged composition in mp3 format; this can be done by clicking the “Open” button in the upper left corner of the window, or the corresponding item in the “File” menu.

I have a problem: I really like this album, but its penultimate song ends with a long “silence” in my headphones (probably as intended by the artist - the end of the main part of the album before the bonus track, which has a slightly different style). And when this divine sound in my head ends, I have to return to the real world, where it is not always comfortable. =)

Therefore, I want the next track to immediately start playing after the end of the penultimate song.

It’s good that I now have the mp3DirectCut program, with which I can easily cut off the silence at the end of a composition without making any changes to the encoding, without changing its quality or any other parameters except timing. Moreover, the program itself recognized “silence” in the audio track.

Right in the middle of the screen, as you probably noticed, there is a vertical dotted line (1), which does not change its centered position, being a kind of “sight” on the diagram. With its help, you can very simply and accurately select a fragment. You can do it the other way (using mouse buttons), but this will be more accurate and clearer. So, let's begin.

Using the slider at the bottom (4), which scrolls the diagram, we move the vertical marker (1) to the beginning of the area that the program has selected as not having audio frequencies (move the slider with the mouse, holding it with the left button). The marker will conveniently “stick” to the line, making it clear that you will not make a mistake. Now click the “Start selection” button (2).

Now drag the slider to the right again – until the very end of the composition (it won’t let you go any further). And this time press the “End selection” button (3).

All that remains is to “cut out” the fragment I don’t need, which I do by pressing the “Delete” button on the keyboard.

Unfortunately, I don’t know why, when selecting this area, the program does not highlight it in a different color (apparently the colors are the same), if you select to the left - where the “frequencies” are visible on the graph - the selection is perfectly highlighted.

That's it, the fragment has been removed - admire it for yourself.

Now you can save the file. To save in mp3 format, leaving it unchanged (except for timing, of course), select the “File” and “Item” menu. Now we save the file in mp3 format - in principle, the program did not provide me with any other option.

That's all. The program can do something else, but no more than is necessary for an inexperienced user in this matter. Still, in order to work more deeply with sound, you need knowledge, and for this there are more powerful programs, usually paid. Well, for starters, this one will do!

Believe it or not, one of my favorite artists (whose track I cut) once created his first “beats” using cassette recorders, re-recording mixes with fragments of different tracks onto cassettes. And these compositions were played on the radio! And even with this simple program you have more possibilities! So, perhaps some of you will start your long journey with this program ;-), who knows...

Uninstalling a program

This is the first time I’ve included such a clause in the manual, but there are reasons for this. The fact is that the program cannot be removed using standard methods. That is, neither standard Windows tools nor third-party programs will help you with this.

A special feature of the program is that it does not create entries in the registry and system folders. All configuration is stored in a file mp3DirectCut.ini, which is located in the program folder ( Program Files\mp3DirectCut).

By deleting this file, you will delete all settings. If you run the program again after this, the updated file will appear again. Therefore, to completely remove the program, delete the mp3DirectCut folder in Program Files, the desktop shortcut (if there is one), and the links in the Start menu.

Advantages and disadvantages of the program

  • The program is simple, functional, will work even on the weakest hardware (tested on a 2005 computer and Windows XP), weighs only 400 kb - you can download from your phone =);
  • Fast and easy navigation even through large files – up to 4 GB;
  • A very good translation into Russian, there are localizations into other “rare” languages (even into Ukrainian), I counted 26 languages.
  • There are simply no obvious disadvantages. One could name a lack of functionality, but everyone already understands that one cannot demand too much from this type of program.

conclusions

The program is made, as they say, “for humans.” The interface, no matter how trivial it may sound, is truly intuitive. I didn’t even bother reviewing the settings, since anyone can figure them out. It is not for nothing that such programs are very loved by users. You will quickly fall in love with it if you often do simple operations with audio files, and it will not interfere with your computer or generally affect the system in any way if you use it only occasionally.

P.P.S.. If the functions of this program are not enough for you, try the full-fledged free...

With new technologies, working on audio recordings is no longer the sole responsibility of professionals. Now every home PC user has the opportunity to trim, mix and apply effects to sound files.

What can we say about transcoding them into various formats. Along with installed programs, online services also allow such actions. The most convenient of the programs and services will be discussed further.

Downloadable editors

The traditional way to edit audio is to use installed programs.

Such programs provide ample opportunities, but for solving simple tasks, such as transcoding a file or trimming a composition, there are “too many” of them. However, many users prefer to use programs.

"People's" program for sound processing. With a free distribution model, it offers a solid toolkit.

The first version of the software became available to the public in 2000. Since then, the project has been continuously developed and improved. The latest version for today was released on March 29, 2015.

Audacity supports reading and writing many formats, and various codecs, including: WAV, AIFF, AU, Ogg, MP2 and MP3. A wide range of options for transcoding audio signals between formats is available.

In fact, any source file can be recoded into any format supported by the program.

Among other features, it is worth mentioning an unlimited number of tracks for mixing and a large number of additional filters and effects.

Audio editor: Wavosaur

A free music editor that can seriously compete with other audio processing programs. In this case, the program does not require installation and does not make any changes to the system registry. A special feature is the ability to display a detailed track in 3D mode.

Wavosaur supports the most common formats: WAV, MP3, OGG, AIF, AIFF.

Ample opportunities are available for signal transcoding between formats, editing an unlimited number of tracks and processing in real time.

A significant drawback of the editor is that the supported operating systems are limited to the range from Win XP to Vista. Owners of the common 7, 8 and 8.1 will have to look for an alternative.

Audio Editor: Audio Editor Gold

Audio Editor Gold, unlike previous programs, is not distributed free of charge. Trial access is limited to 30 days and constantly pops up a reminder to register. It features a friendly interface.

Track editing is done on a wave model, which can be scaled in detail to more accurately highlight sections of the track. You can edit each channel separately.

The software supports free transcoding between all supported formats, including WAV, WMA, Ogg and MP3. Any file can be freely recoded into one of the available formats.

Online audio editors

Network technologies are evolving. Their current level makes it possible to transfer the functionality of many programs to the browser. Editing audio and video using network resources is no longer fiction, but a reality accessible to any network user.

Audio editor: TwistedWave

With TwistedWave, there is no need to download and install proprietary audio editing software. The service offers the ability to trim, re-encode or add a filter to an audio recording using a browser.

Among the possibilities are about 40 VTS effects, fading effects over the entire track or sections of it, transcoding and saving the finished track in the cloud.

The service supports working with many formats: WAV, MP3, FLAC, Ogg, MP2, WMA, AIFF, AIFC, Apple CAF. TwistedWave allows you to freely transcode files between supported formats.

For the saved recording, you can manually set the bitrate from 8 kB/s to 320 kB/s. That is, the service turned out to be a good audio converter.

Info! Free processing is only possible for mono mode. You will have to pay extra for processing a recording in two or more channels.

Audio editor: Online MP3 Cutter

With this service, cutting music will turn into a simple process that takes a minimum of time. To get the required segment of the composition you will need only three steps: open the file, determine the segment and download the finished piece of the song.

The saved segment can be recoded into a more convenient format. The service supports five formats: MP3, AMR, WAC, AAC and Apple CAF. It is also convenient to use for simple audio transcoding.

It is enough to simply not define the segment to be extracted from the composition, and choose to save it in a different format. That is, despite the fact that cutting music is the main purpose of Online MP3 Cutter, it can be used to successfully reformat audio.

Payment will not be required at any stage of using the service. A simple and intuitive interface with a minimum of necessary features is ideal for everyday use.

Audio Editor: Make Your Own Ringtone

A convenient online service designed to create your own ringtones. Unlike the previous audio trimming service, it has 16 effects that can be applied to the recording.

Six audio encoding formats are supported: MP3, OGG, AAC, M4R, MPC and MP4. The finished file can be saved either to a computer or to a mobile device. It is possible to send the finished cut by email.

Make Your Own Ringtone can also be successfully used as an online music converter. All supported formats are freely convertible. That is, it is not necessary to trim the composition, you can simply save it in the desired format.

Not every program can digitize an analog recording or create a soundtrack for a film. CHIP will tell you about the best audio editors.

The arsenal of tools available to modern audio editors is impressive. Sound processing is a task no less complex than, say, retouching a portrait, and restoring old audio recordings can be compared to restoring a damaged photograph. But unlike computer graphics, where Adobe Photoshop dominates, there is no clear leader among audio editing applications. In this article we will look at several of the most successful, in our opinion, applications that will allow you to digitize rare recordings from reel-to-reel and audio cassettes, make a ringtone for your mobile phone, remove noise that arose when recording your voice through a microphone, etc.

Sound Forge Pro 10: Restoration Expert

Noise Reduction uses several different noise reduction algorithms. Sony, which is developing this audio editor, has managed to create a very convenient, simple and powerful tool for audio processing. Many users rightly give their preference to this program. Sound Forge Pro is a professional editor that, in the right hands, can work wonders with the material being processed. As with most other sound editors, the loaded track is presented in the program window in the form of a diagram. Any defect, any recording error - all this can be seen on the “sine wave” of the track. By examining the waveform of the signal, the user can accurately determine which part of the recording needs processing. Sound Forge Pro is one of the best solutions for audio data recovery. In addition to accurate restoration of frequency characteristics (the editor has three types of equalizer - graphic, paragraph and parametric), the program contains many tools for removing noise. A recording defect can be caused by various reasons - the crackling of a vinyl record, extraneous hum, etc. Each type of noise requires a special approach to eliminating it, so there are many ways to restore a damaged audio recording. Depending on the nature of the sound artifact, in Sound Forge Pro you can interpolate the value of the sound, “masking” the damaged area with neighboring values, you can replace the missing fragment with data from the adjacent channel. The Noise Reduction module, which is present in the program, can use four different noise reduction algorithms, and the optimal option is determined in most cases empirically. In the simplest cases, you can use a threshold filter for noise - it will cut off all interference whose amplitude is below a user-specified value. One of the most powerful and advanced tools of the program is the composition spectrum analyzer. The characteristics of an audio recording can be viewed in individual channels, you can set the frequency range for plotting the spectrum, etc. Most audio editor commands can be accessed using keyboard shortcuts. If some of them are inconvenient or keyboard shortcuts are not assigned to them, this can be done manually in the program settings. Sound Forge Pro allows you to save lists of custom keyboard shortcuts. They can be loaded depending on the tasks performed in the program or used after reinstalling the system.

Adobe Audition CS5.5: Audio with video

The Audition sound editor, released today by Adobe, was previously called Cool Edit Pro and from the first versions won the favor of audio engineering enthusiasts. When Syntrillium Software, which laid down the basic concept of the application, transferred the rights to the program to Adobe, the deal amounted to a huge figure - 16.5 million dollars, and, it must be said, the audio editor was worth the money.
The integration of a sound editor into the software package for working with video and graphics Master Collection CS only added advantages to the program. Now users of Adobe's popular suite of programs can enjoy end-to-end editing. For example, when working with material in the Premiere Pro video editor, you can quickly switch between video and audio projects, preparing a multi-channel audio track for the video being created. The program also supports batch processing of files.
Many of the tools in this package are so convenient and perfect that the developers practically do not make significant changes, releasing the next version of the program over and over again. Using Audition, for example, you can very quickly clear an audio recording of noise, especially if the noise is caused by cyclic processes, say, interference from the electromagnetic field created by a transformer. In order to get rid of unwanted recording defects, in this case, it is necessary to highlight the noise profile on the sound diagram - the section of the recording where interference is best heard, without extraneous sounds. Next, the program can exclude the cyclically repeating noise amplitude from the main audio material. In some cases, this method makes it possible to suppress noise very effectively.
The editor is quite flexible in customizing the interface. The appearance of the program changes depending on what task the user is working on. If this is a multi-track mixing, the editor will look like a multi-track studio; if the work is being done on two monitors, Audition will occupy both screens. If necessary, the program can build and display a sonogram right next to the waveform of the edited audio track.
The program can work in multi-track mode, in which the interface takes on the appearance of a sequencer. The user can use an unlimited number of tracks, which makes this audio editor an indispensable tool for a musician or DJ. Using a multi-track virtual studio, Audition allows you to create professional mixes from dozens of different recorded parts.
Adobe Audition supports all modern digital audio technologies, including support for 5.1 multichannel audio, ASIO low-latency transfer protocol, and VST plug-ins.

Audacity 1.3.13: Reasonable sufficiency

Audacity can normalize the signal level throughout an audio session, create a smooth fading effect, automatically remove sections with silence, remove vocals from a composition, and it is also cross-platform. Free software that could be used by professionals for their own purposes is a rarity. The Audacity audio editor is one of the few free solutions that can compete on equal terms with expensive commercial developments. Not every commercial audio editor can boast such a powerful audio processing engine - up to 32-bit floating point. The program can also work with audio material in 16/24-bit modes with sampling rates up to 96 kHz. Another undoubted advantage of this audio editor is its support for Linux and Mac OS X platforms. The functionality of the program in any operating system is almost identical (with the exception of additional modules). The program allows you to record audio from an external source, such as a microphone. Recording can start automatically as soon as the program detects an increase in sound volume. The signal level at which automatic recording will trigger is determined by the settings. If the project you're working on uses external files, it's easy to lose some components. To prevent this from happening, you can check dependencies in the editor or specify in the configuration settings to automatically copy audio data to the project when saving it. Audacity makes it very convenient to control the track level. Using control points, you can adjust the amplitude envelope of the sound so that the recording becomes louder or quieter in the desired areas. Audacity can repair corrupted data - open audio files that have a missing or damaged header.

Connoisseurs of “high-quality” uncompressed audio in FLAC, APE, etc. formats will appreciate the tool built into Audacity for generating frequency spectrum. Based on the shape of the constructed curve, you can easily determine from what source the audio disc image found on the Internet was made. Although the program has many tools that can be found in other similar applications, they often differ in how they work. For example, the equivalent of the Pencil tool in Sound Forge Pro is a tool called “envelope change.” It, like the “pencil” in the audio editor from Sonу, makes it possible to manually draw the shape of a sound wave. However, in Audacity it can only be used when the track scale is selected enough to see individual sound samples. You can find many interesting filters in the program, and many of them help solve specific problems. For example, Audacity can normalize the signal level across an entire audio session, create a fade-out effect, automatically remove silence, and even remove vocals from a musical composition, creating a karaoke effect. Audacity contains a built-in hardware performance test. After a short test, the program will show the computer's potential - how many audio tracks this configuration can handle simultaneously. Those who find the standard arsenal of the program insufficient can use add-ons for Audacity. However, in this case you need to keep in mind that many plugins are commercial developments, and you will have to pay for their use. Another advantage of the program is the correct shutdown, after which a minimum of “garbage” in the form of temporary files remains in the system.

Conclusion

In order to make the sound editor interesting to a certain category of users, the creators select its capabilities in such a way that the application is targeted at the target group. For example, if you do a lot of video editing, Adobe Audition will be handy to have on hand. To restore rare recordings, it is optimal to use Sound Forge Pro. Well, if you are not involved in professional processing of audio files and open an audio editor no more than once a month, be sure to take a closer look at Audacity, whose tools are enough to solve the most popular tasks.
