Samsung hasn't changed the design of the Samsung Galaxy S9 much: just like the Galaxy S8, you get a metal frame and curved glass panels on the front and back. Why are the new chips better? They have faster loading speeds, superior CPU and GPU performance, and increased efficiency. RAM on the regular S9 remains 4 GB, like the S8, while the S9 Plus gets 6 GB of RAM. External memory remains at 64 GB, although it can now be increased to 256 GB for the S9 and S9+.

Big changes include improved speakers that now deliver sound directly to you instead of into the palm of your hand. These new speakers are made by Austrian audio electronics manufacturer AKG and support Dolby Atmos for 360-degree sound. You will notice that the sound from the speakers is not only louder, but also clearer.

The other big change and highlight of the S9 is the camera. The 12-megapixel sensor now has a smart aperture shift that will move between f/2.4 and f/1.5 depending on environmental conditions. As we expected, the new Samsung S9 is powered by an octa-core Exynos 9810 processor, which improves performance and power efficiency over last year's flagship. The silver device looks almost white and very clean, the gold one has a combination of pink and just gold. Both of these options are great at hiding fingerprints. The gray has a brown tint and is not as deep as last year's black or matte black. The S8+ is available in four color options: black, blue, silver and grey. All fingerprints are clearly visible.

The glass on these devices cannot be called slippery, but if the smartphones are dropped, it will probably break, so it is recommended to purchase a case. Of course, it will hide the beauty of the devices, but it will save on repairs.

Another important aspect is the size. Both smartphones will be tight in your trouser pocket, especially the iPhone. The S8+ is narrow, the iPhone is wide and you need to use both hands to operate it.

The weight of the iPhone is 202 g, while the Samsung device weighs only 173 g. Smartphones feel solid in the hand, but when carried in a pocket, the additional weight of the iPhone adds inconvenience and you can clearly feel it.

Considering the large size, it's annoying that Samsung continues to place it on the back near the camera. You can get used to this, but it doesn’t make it any more convenient. On the iPhone, the scanner is on the front, where it is easier to reach.

For gamers, the iPhone is a more attractive device. It's not just about performance, but also about the selection of games in the App Store. As you know, the Apple mobile platform brings developers much more profit, so they release their programs and games here first, and sometimes only here.

In terms of storage, the iPhone is available in 64GB and 256GB variants. traditionally absent. S8+ also has two options, 64 GB and 128 GB, there is microSD here.

Cameras

The difference between the cameras of these smartphones can be seen with the naked eye, since the iPhone has a dual rear camera, while the Galaxy has a single one. Portrait photography

Portrait photography on the Galaxy can be done using third-party apps, but it doesn't compare to the iPhone's built-in capabilities. Whether you consider this feature important or not depends on how often and for what you use the camera on your smartphone. Portrait mode photos on the iPhone are smaller than regular photos and have less detail, but overall the image is interesting. As the name implies, this mode is used for shooting portraits, so it is not suitable for shooting flowers. There is still a lot of room to improve this functionality, which should happen in future generations of smartphones.

Instead of portrait photography, the S8+ offers a feature called “Selective Focus”, its purpose is approximately the same. Here, photography is slower than usual and you need to hold the camera firmly in your hand as several images are taken simultaneously and combined into one. You can then set the focus to the foreground and blur the background, just like in portrait mode. The accuracy is not as high as on the iPhone, but not bad. The same feature is available on the front camera, unlike the iPhone.

There is a new effect on the Apple smartphone called Portrait Lighting. It resembles regular filters. There are Studio, Outline, Stage and Stage Mono options. The first effect is the most subtle, the others make too radical changes and often do not work as intended. This functionality is still in beta testing, so there is hope for it to improve in the future.

Video

When it comes to shooting video, the iPhone has a clear advantage. It supports 4K at 60fps, while the Galaxy is content with the same resolution at 30fps. As a result, the video quality becomes lower and it is almost impossible to edit it on Android, while on iPhone you can do it in the iMovie app, although 4K 60fps is not yet supported. The file size for this type of shooting is twice as high, and energy consumption is also increased, so it is better to buy a 256 GB model if you plan to often shoot video at maximum quality.

Even when comparing 4K 30fps video, the iPhone offers improved dynamic range and stabilization. On Galaxy, when shooting video, there is a jelly effect due to the image module.

Formats and sizes of photos and videos

iPhone 8 uses the new HEIF and HEVC photo and video formats, respectively. As a result, the file size became two times smaller. Also, do not forget about the charging speed. iPhone 8 is the first to support fast charging, which has been available on other smartphones for years. To access it, you need to use a different adapter than the one included in the package. Thus, the adapter will have to be purchased additionally, which will cost several thousand rubles. Considering the high cost of the iPhone and the fact that other smartphones include such adapters in the package, Apple does not deserve good words. In addition, this adapter weighs more than others. It will charge the device from zero to 40% in half an hour, similar to what happens on the Galaxy.

The iPhone also acquired support for the Qi wireless charging standard, which has also been available on Android for a long time. This support cannot be called maximum, since it is supported by only 7.5 W versus 15 W on the S8+.

On September 12, the Apple iPhone X was presented, which is positioned as an ultra-innovative frameless smartphone with support for all kinds of modern technologies. However, in Cupertino they very immodestly forget that the Samsung Galaxy S8 already has all the same things.

In fact, the only thing in which the iPhone X is truly significantly superior to its South Korean competitor is the six-core A11 Bionic mobile platform. Another thing is the curved screen of the Samsung Galaxy S8, which has both a larger effective area and higher resolution. In addition, if Apple is taking the first steps towards switching to AMOLED, the Koreans have been producing these same matrices themselves for many years.

Samsung has announced the release of two flagships at once. In addition to the Samsung Galaxy S8, a larger copy will go on sale - the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus - the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge smartphone in everything, but not in name.

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S8, like the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, is equipped with a curved display, however, other differences between the new products are less obvious than the differences between the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge models. And in order for you to have a clearer idea, we have prepared a review for you in which we will tell you about the common and different features of the two flagships.

Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus: Comparison of New Galaxy

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge has a curved display, which the Samsung Galaxy S7 cannot boast of, however, the new Samsung smartphones do not have such differences - both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are equipped with curved displays. It is for this reason that the word “Edge” was removed from the name (English Edge - edge, smooth).

Both smartphones are created with support for Super AMOLED technology, the aspect ratio of the smartphones is 18.5:9, the display has a resolution of 1440x2960 ​​pixels (for comparison, the resolution of last year's smartphones was 1440x2560 pixels).

Thus, as you may have guessed, the main difference between the flagships is size: the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone has a 5.8-inch display, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has a 6.2-inch display.

It's also worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus display is more polished, but this difference is unlikely to be of much interest to you, since the number of pixels is the same on both smartphones.

Design

The flagships Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus have almost the same design with a metal frame covered with glass on both sides, tiny frames above and below the display.

The developers abandoned physical buttons, and moved the fingerprint scanner to the rear panel of the case. Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are waterproof and dustproof.

As mentioned earlier, the main differences between the flagships relate to size. The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy S8 are 148.9x68x8mm, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is 159x74x8mm. As we can see, they are the same in thickness, however, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is much wider and longer.

These dimensions allow us to call the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus a “teleshet” - a smartphone with a very large display, which is more typical for tablets than for phones. Even the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 is considered large, and yet, you could not even imagine that these flagships would feature displays of such impressive sizes.

By practically abandoning the frame, the company's developers managed to make the classic smartphone Samsung Galaxy S8 smaller than the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus almost the same size as the iPhone 7 Plus.

Of course, due to its size, the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus is heavier than the Samsung Galaxy S8, although you won't feel much of a difference.


Operating system and power

In terms of power and operating system, there is no difference between the smartphones, just as there is no significant difference between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus in principle, however, different versions of smartphones are provided for different regions.

Both smartphones have 4GB of RAM, but the architecture may vary depending on where you live. Samsung did not specify the names of the processors that were used in development, but we know that the processors are eight-core with a clock frequency of 2.35 GHz.

It is likely that the smartphone will be equipped with a Snapdragon 835 processor in the United States, and Exynos 8895 in Europe and most other regions.

If there is any difference between the above-mentioned processors, you should not worry about it - both processors are high-end and high-tech.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 run Android Nougat with Samsung's TouchWiz UI.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones have identical single-lens 12 megapixel cameras, which are practically no different from the cameras of last year’s flagships Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung Galaxy S7.

But the front camera has already been improved: both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus have an 8-megapixel front camera, and the S7 line was equipped with a 5-megapixel front camera. Battery and power

Apart from the display size, the battery is the other most important difference between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones, as the developers used more space in the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus to fit a 3500 mAh battery, although the classic Samsung Galaxy S8 has a battery with a capacity of only 3000mAh.

This is a very questionable change for both smartphones, given the size of the phones that charge such batteries. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus has an even smaller battery than the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, which has a 3600mAh battery.

This is a very depressing circumstance, however, perhaps this decision was made to avoid repeating the history of the Samsung Note 7 batteries. Moreover, given the more energy efficient processors, the batteries of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus can last longer than the batteries of similar capacities in other phones (we'll definitely tell you about this when we test them). Both smartphones also support high-speed charging via a Type C USB port.

Price

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S8 will cost $720, making it one of the most expensive smartphones available on sale. If you want to buy the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus on the first day it goes on sale, it will cost you $825, so you'll have to shell out a little more money for a larger smartphone.
