Screen size and resolution of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Of all Samsung smartphones, the Galaxy Note 8 phablet will be the largest. The phablet features a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2960×1440 pixels. The screens of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ have the same resolution, however, due to the fact that the dimensions of the display itself are smaller, the pixel density is greater - 570 and 529 ppi, respectively. The Galaxy Note 8 has a pixel density of 521 ppi.

Design and colors of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Like the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy Note 8 has a wide screen. However, instead of increasing the width, Samsung made the device slightly larger. As a result, the width of the Note 8 turned out to be the same as the ill-fated Note 7, only slightly thicker and longer. Therefore, you can still operate the phablet with one hand, despite the wider screen.

If you've gotten used to the Note 7 during its short time on the market, keep in mind that the Note 8 will be slightly heavier. If Note 7 weighed 169 g, then Note 8 – 195 g.

Initially, the new product will be available only in two colors – Midnight Black and Orchid Gray. Samsung is also working on blue and gold color options, which should appear a little later.

Dual camera Samsung Galaxy Note 8

What truly sets the Galaxy Note 8 apart from not only other devices in the Galaxy lineup, but Samsung devices in general, is its dual rear camera setup. Both modules are equipped with 12-megapixel matrices. The wide-angle lens has an aperture of f/1.7, and the telephoto lens has an aperture of f/2.4. Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the telephoto lens features 2x optical zoom. However, optical image stabilization is present in both main cameras of the Galaxy Note 8, and only in one of the iPhone 7 Plus.

In addition to zooming in, the Note 8's dual camera lets you add some effects when taking portraits, such as blurring the background for a more artistic look. You can adjust the blur level both before and after pressing the shutter release. In addition, the dual camera allows you to take pictures with both wide-angle and telephoto lenses at the same time.

In addition to the two main ones, the Galaxy Note 8 received an 8-megapixel front camera with an f/1.7 aperture. Let's remember that the ill-fated predecessor of the phablet was equipped with a 5-megapixel selfie camera.

Processor, RAM and internal memory Samsung Galaxy Note 8

During the presentation of the device, Samsung representatives revealed very few details about the processor. It is known that in the US, the Galaxy Note 8 will be sold with Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. The same processor is used in the Galaxy S8, as well as other high-end Android smartphones such as the OnePlus 5 and HTC U11.

The speed of the Galaxy Note 8 will increase due to the large amount of RAM. In contrast to 4 GB in the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the new product received as much as 6 GB. Let's remember that last year's model was also equipped with 4 GB of RAM.

Similar to the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 comes with 64GB of internal storage, which can be expanded via microSD card up to 256GB.

Accessibility features of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

One of the highlights of the new product is the S Pen stylus. Previously, you could use it to take notes without even having to unlock the device first. Note 8 now lets you save up to 100 of these notes, and Live Messages lets you turn handwritten doodles into animated GIFs.

Notably, the S Pen can be used as a translator. Swipe the stylus over the text and get a translation. The new product supports 71 languages.

The App Pair feature allows you to make the most of your phablet's wide screen. With its help, you can link two applications that will run simultaneously. The function will appeal to those who like, for example, to watch a video while writing a message.

IP68 means that after spending half an hour under water at a depth of 1.5 m, the Galaxy Note 8 will still work. The same goes for the S Pen.

Among other things, the Galaxy Note 8 is equipped with an iris scanner to unlock the phablet.

The new product will work with Samsun DeX, a docking station that allows you to use the device as a laptop computer (it costs $150). The manufacturer introduced DeX with the Galaxy S8, but it will be more suitable for Note 8 users who are more interested in productivity.

What's included in the Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Battery Life and Charging

Given the problems with spontaneous combustion of Galaxy Note 7 batteries, it can be assumed that this time the batteries have undergone more thorough testing. The new model has a smaller battery capacity - 3300 mAh compared to 3500 in Note 7. It is too early to say how this will affect the battery life of the phablet. The battery capacity of the Galaxy S8+ is 3500 mAh and lasts for 11 hours.

Galaxy Note 8 supports wireless charging and is compatible with WPC and PMA standards. In addition, the device supports fast charging technology, provided that the charger is used,
compatible with Adaptive Fast Charging (AFC) or Quick Charge 2.0.

Delivery package and first impressions

id="sub1">

The premium quality of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (SM-N950) is visible in absolutely everything, including the packaging. Thus, the device is supplied in a box made of thick black cardboard with magnets and a dust jacket. On the reverse side is a summary of the technical specifications. The model name is printed on the front. There is no image of the gadget.

In the box you can see the device itself, as well as:

Charger plug adapter with USB connector

Cable for synchronizing with a computer USB - USB Type C

microUSB to USB Type-C adapter (OTG adapter for connecting external devices)

AKG stereo headset with 3.5 mm miniJack connector

SIM card tray clip

Instructions, warranty card

If we take average data with a mixed mode of use, we get two days of battery life. Those who use only calls can easily count on 4 days of work. In terms of autonomy, the device differs for the better from the vast majority of Android smartphones.

The device has several energy saving modes. Some of them limit the brightness of the screen backlight and processor frequency. In this scenario, the operating time will increase by at least 20%. There is an extreme (maximum) energy saving mode. In this case, the screen displays only white and gray colors, all applications except telephone communications, SMS, calendar and alarm clocks are disabled.

The phone has a fast charging feature. The battery is fully charged in 1 hour 5 minutes. There is also built-in wireless charging.

User Interface and Operating System

id="sub7">

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes pre-installed with Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and Clean UI.

Smartphone owners have access to all Samsung branded programs, including S Health for monitoring physical activity and health, Bixby voice assistant, gesture support, KNOX - for separating data into personal and work, etc. The missing programs can be downloaded from the Samsung App Store and Google Play. The model supports the Samsung Pay service.

The smartphone contains gesture control functions and S Pen drawing capabilities that can make everyday use easier and more convenient. So, there is support for one-handed control and gestures.

Smart Capture lets you take a screenshot of even hidden areas of the screen, which is useful when you need to capture an entire web page or when text doesn't fit on one screen.

Using the Game Launcher and Game Tools applications, you can disable touch control buttons during the game, which will prevent accidental clicks, quickly respond to a message without minimizing the game, or completely block any notifications.

S Pen stylus

id="sub8">

As I noted just above, the S Pen is located at the bottom of the Galaxy Note 8. It has a thinner tip, improved pressure sensitivity, and new features and functions. Here are some of them.

The Animated Messages feature lets you share animated texts or pictures with friends across platforms that support animated GIFs.

On-Screen Notepad allows you to store up to 100 pages of notes on your phone, which you can take immediately after removing the S Pen, pin notes to when the screen is off, and easily edit them later.

There is also an improved translation feature using the S Pen. It allows you to quickly translate not only individual words, but also entire sentences in 71 languages, as well as convert foreign currencies and units of measurement. To do this, just point the electronic pen at the desired word on the smartphone screen.

Bixby voice assistant

id="sub9">

S Voice has become Bixby. Samsung fully believes that its development will become something similar to Siri, Cortana or Google Assistant. In addition to standard recognition of voice commands, Bixby looks at the context in which the request is pronounced, that is, user behavior; the application that is open at this moment; location, etc. In fact, Bixby works with Big Data that your smartphone accumulates.

Currently, Bixby's current features cannot be called intelligent. The prediction system works correctly only in every second case. To train it, you need millions of people to start using Bixby; in such systems it doesn’t happen otherwise - the more they use it, the better they become.

According to analysts, a full-fledged version of Bixby with voice commands, prompts, and more will be released only in December 2017, along with updating the device to Android 8. So we're waiting.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id="sub10">

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a dual main camera. These are two sensors of 12 megapixels each. One of them is a 1/2.55” matrix with a wide-angle lens (f/1.7), the second is a 1/3.6” telephoto (f/2.4), and it is this one that provides double optical zoom. There is phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilization. Thanks to the increased system performance and the fact that the camera module received its own memory, a comfortable Burst Mode appeared. This mode allows you to take several dozen pictures in a row. In addition, the camera focuses on objects faster.

The camera takes slightly better quality pictures in difficult lighting conditions. In the settings you can find additional shooting modes, including PRO. Otherwise, improvements in camera performance are not so significant compared to its predecessors.

The camera interface is made in the traditional Samsung style. There are many settings and preset modes, including self-portrait, panorama, night, continuous shooting, HDR and GIF creation. Video capabilities allow shooting in 4K. In FullHD you can choose a frame rate of 60 or 30 frames per second. There is optical stabilization.

In manual mode, ISO settings are available at 50, 100, 200, 400, 800. The following shooting modes are available: single shot, smile detection, continuous, panorama, vintage, portrait, landscape, night mode, sports, indoor, beach/snow, sunset, dawn, autumn colors, fireworks, text, twilight, against the light.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It is quite photosensitive (f/1.7), has a 1/3.6” matrix, and has autofocus. When taking a selfie, you can adjust your skin tone, face shape, and eye size. There is also a panoramic selfie function, although the optics are already wide-angle - you can capture a small company without special modes.

Results

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a prime example of a very interesting premium device. It is clear that very wealthy people can afford it. The device is addressed primarily to creative and business audiences. For the former, the opportunity to draw on the device’s screen, as well as take photographs and shoot videos of the highest quality, will come in handy. The dual main camera here is very good. For the latter, a smartphone is suitable for working outside a stationary workplace. The function of multiple windows in different applications is conveniently implemented here, the ability to take some notes using the S Pen stylus, as well as very respectable battery life even under extreme load.

The advantages of the device include the gorgeous 6.3-inch screen, which occupies almost the entire front part. In addition, the device has high-performance hardware with a large amount of RAM and built-in memory. The user interface flies, heavy games and videos work without lag. There is a mode for working with VR helmets and augmented reality programs.

I would also note protection against dust and water according to class IP68. This allows the smartphone to be at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. This, of course, does not mean that the phone can be washed under water, much less tested for water resistance in a washing machine. But if you drop it in water, nothing will happen to it. Convenient features include facial recognition, iris scanner, gesture control, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Samsung Pay.

By default, users have access to the S Health application to monitor their physical activity, and KNOXX to create a protected data area. The main camera was also at a high level.
Among the disadvantages is the risk of breaking your smartphone from the first fall on asphalt or stones. But in most cases, the screen tolerates falls without consequences. Much more critical was the transfer of the fingerprint scanner to the back panel of the smartphone. Because of this, using Samsung Pay has become unusual. Another disadvantage is the memory card slot combined with one of the SIM cards.

When it comes to potential competitors for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the only one that comes to mind is the iPhone 8 Plus. Both devices have comparable camera quality and performance. However, Note 8 looks more interesting in terms of appearance and various technical features. The Samsung device is more versatile. You don’t need to buy accessories costing 7-9 thousand rubles for wireless charging or listening to music at home.

Advantages

High-quality assembly and stylish appearance

Great big screen

High performance

Support LTE cat. 16

Water and dust protection

Dual SIM support

AKG headphones included

Face scanner and iris scanner

High quality camera

Flaws

Inconvenient location of the fingerprint scanner

High price

Combined slot for SIM cards and memory cards

On the day of publication of this test review, you could buy a Samsung Galaxy Note8 (SM-N950) at a price of 69,990 rubles.

Below you will find information about the colors in which you will be able to purchase the new flagship Note 8

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 phablet has been officially confirmed to come with a 6.3-inch QHD infinity display, dual front camera, 3300mAh battery and extremely powerful internals.

The design is very reminiscent of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, but this does not mean that the colors of the new smartphone will be the same.

Samsung has revealed some of the color schemes for the upcoming Galaxy Note 8, and in this article you can check out all the shades of the smartphone available for you to choose from.

All colors will be available in markets after launch, however, depending on Samsung's decisions, some colors may not be available in your market immediately, but only after some time.

Midnight Black

The first color of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is Midnight Black, which we already had the pleasure of meeting during the launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus smartphones. This is the darkest shade of the Galaxy Note 8, which is perfect if you want a jet black version of the new smartphone.

The color will be available to customers in the UK, United States and Australia. It is also quite possible that this color of the phone will be available for some other markets.

Orchid Gray

The lightest, but at the same time expressive shade of the Galaxy Note 8 is Orchid Gray. If you want an iridescent version of the flagship, this color option is your choice.

Will you be able to purchase it? The phone in this color will be available in the US upon launch, but will not be available in the UK or Australia. There is no information yet regarding the availability of the color in other markets.

Maple Gold

Maple Gold is back. We can say that this color is the most expressive option of the new Galaxy Note 8 phablet. If you are looking for an attractive and striking option for your Note 8, this shade may well satisfy all your desires.

Will you be able to purchase it? This color option will not be available at launch in the US, but will only be available to UK and Australian customers.

Deep Sea Blue

We won't see a Coral Blue colorway for the Galaxy Note 8; the color Deep Sea Blue will appear instead. This is a darker and richer shade than we are used to seeing in Samsung products.

Will you be able to purchase it? No, at least not in the US, UK and Australia at launch. It is not yet known exactly in which markets this color will be available. Most likely, sooner or later, this version of the smartphone will be available for purchase in both the USA and Britain.

Other colors

Samsung tends to offer other color options for its products after the official launch, so we don't rule out the possibility that the Galaxy Note 8 will be available in other colors as well. If this happens, we will definitely let you know.
